Employer-provided coverage delivers access to high-quality and affordable care to over 180 million hardworking Americans. Coverage through work extends further than yearly check-ups and physical health care – it gives Americans affordable access to mental health support.

During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, employers and employees throughout the country discussed how employer-provided coverage supports individuals' mental health journeys. Here are their stories.

Employers Recognizing Importance of Investment in Mental Health

“May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and as a business owner and as someone who has seen the effects of mental illness on people I care about, I encourage everyone who gets coverage through their job to take advantage of all the resources available if they feel they need help.”

– Jack McCabe (NY) , small business owner

“As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, please remember there is nothing wrong with seeking health care, physical or mental. Let’s acknowledge the important role employers play in providing and expanding access to these life-saving services that we should all be utilizing.”

– Marni Stahlman (FL) , CEO and President of Mental Health Alliance of Central Florida

“For Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to highlight one of the best ways people can access affordable and quality mental health care, your employer-provided coverage. Many hardworking New Yorkers have access to great options like telehealth, counselors, and in-network physicians that can help them through the mental health journey.”

– John Phraner (NY) , small business owner

How Enrollees Utilized Their Coverage

“As Missourians, it's our responsibility to help ourselves and our loved ones gain access to the mental health services they need. We must be better advocates and collaborators. I’m fortunate enough to receive coverage through my job, and it has been a godsend.”

– Dave Myers (MO)

“As we continue through Mental Health Awareness Month this May, I’m writing to encourage recognition of the employer-provided coverage plans that represent a leading avenue to care for almost half of all Alabamians.”

– Vicki Bailey (AL)

The pandemic has caused widespread anxiety, depression, and isolation, which many are still struggling to overcome. These increasing challenges emphasize the need for access to mental health care services. However, successful programs like employer-provided coverage plans provide vital services to working Minnesotans and their families. It is crucial we support these programs.”

- Cindy Bohm (MN)

From telemedicine to counseling, health insurance providers are working to support patients by helping them find the services they need at the price they can afford. Expanding access to telehealth appointments, making mental health support available in primary care settings and specialty offices where appropriate, and working to increase the number and types of mental health care professionals in health plan networks.
