See You in Portland: Five Reasons to Love the City of Roses

As one of the biggest cities in the Pacific Northwest, Portland, Oregon is known for its relaxed vibe, diverse cultural scene, and access to the great outdoors. And it just so happens to be where ÐÜèÊÓƵ2023, our signature annual event, is calling home this year. We’re bringing together the people, ideas, and solutions guiding greater health for years to come.

Whether it’s learning the next great ideas in health care at ÐÜèÊÓƵ2023, visiting the city’s historic downtown located right outside the Oregon Convention Center or exploring the many parks, forests, rivers, and breathtaking mountaintops surrounding the city, adventure (and 70-degree June weather) awaits in Portland.

Hit the Trails

Trailheads, rejoice. Portland is a running, biking, and hiking mecca with plenty of cycling paths zigzagging the city and climbs for all skill levels. Forest Park, Mount Tabor, and Tryon Creek State Park offer a near endless network of trails weaving through forests and across creeks. Hop on the Willamette Greenway for great views of the Willamette River and downtown Portland. Or take a short drive to explore alpine lake hikes near Mount Hood and waterfall trails in the Columbia River Gorge.

  • Fun fact: runs from May 28 to June 11 and features fireworks, parades, fun runs, and lots of roses.

Get into the Groove

Portland is a haven for music lovers. The Moda Center is home to the NBA’s Trail Blazers, and the city’s largest live music venue, while the 1,400-person Roseland Theater has nightly concerts featuring a mix of genres and performers. Intimate venues like Doug Fir Lounge, Mississippi Studios, and Dante’s feature a little bit of everything, including rock, jazz, folk, punk, bluegrass, and more.

And don’t skip the record stores. Jackpot, Little Axe, Music Millennium, and Tomorrow Records are just a few spots to take some new and vintage vinyl for a spin.

Brews – Caffeinated or Craft?

It’s hard to say which libation is more beloved in Portland – coffee or craft beer. Stumptown Coffee Roasters has been a downtown fixture since 1999 and is almost as famous in the Pacific Northwest as that other Seattle coffee company. Right now, international products locally roasted are big on the Portland bean scene - Nossa Familia imports its beans from Brazil, La Perlita from Mexico, and Portland Cà Phê Roasters from Vietnam.

Portland is known as the craft beer capital and home to more than 70 breweries, including Occidental Brewing Company, Breakside Brewery, Culmination Brewing, Great Notion Brewing, and so, so many more.

Downtown Dreaming

Portland’s compact and walkable downtown offers easy access to great and diverse bars, restaurants and food trucks, (tax free) shopping , historic architecture, vibrant cultural offerings, and an abundance of green spaces.

Grab a coffee and a bench at Pioneer Courthouse Square, take in the Italian Rococo style of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, stretch your legs at the South Waterfront Park, refuel at the Pine Street Market, spend a few hours at the Portland Art Museum or explore cool boutiques like Bridge & Burn, Woonwinkel, Self Edge, Wildfang, and Danner.

  • Fun Fact: Portland’s  manages the city’s public transportation system, which includes bus service, the MAX light rail, and a streetcar.

Leading Thinkers

Portland is home to some of the top health care companies, insurance providers and research institutions in the country, including CareOregon, Oregon Health and Science University, and Oregon Medical Research Center, among others.
