WASHINGTON, D.C. – (August 2, 2023) –Miranda Motter, AHIP’s Senior Vice President of State Affairs and Policy, recently joined the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans to discuss Medicaid redeterminations from a national perspective.
After a 3-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, states have begun checking whether people enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP are still eligible for these programs. Known as Medicaid redetermination, this process will impact 1 in every 4 Americans and has resulted in nearly 4 million people disenrolled from Medicaid .
Motter noted the unprecedented nature of the redeterminations process:
“Nearly 95 million people in states all across the country are going to have their Medicaid eligibility checked or verified…And the people covered in Medicaid haven’t gone through this process over 3 years. So, I don’t think that any of us can…understate the massiveness…of this.”
Motter also discussed the role of health insurance providers in helping people stay covered:
“Estimates are that…between 8 and 24 million people—individuals, families, kids—could lose Medicaid coverage during this process. And so health insurance providers are…continuing to build awareness. … [we’re] working alongside federal and state agencies to urge Medicaid enrollees to take action. You’ve got to take action now.”
Motter closed by highlighting the role that social and environmental factors play, sharing an experience of a care manager for a Medicaid managed care organization. Health insurance providers are focused on keeping eligible people enrolled in Medicaid, helping to ensure access to these important interventions:
“The care manager…saw that there wasn’t any food in the house. Not having food explained a lot about the struggles that person with having with their health care. And that health care manager was immediately able to connect that person to a food source. Which in turn helped improve that person’s health. Really meeting their social needs is life-changing for so many.”
